The company was founded in 1997 as a DVD-by-mail rental service. In 2007, Netflix launched its streaming service, allowing users to watch TV shows and movies on their computers. Initially, the streaming service was offered as a free add-on for DVD rental subscribers, but in 2010, Netflix began offering its streaming service as a standalone service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix mainly competed against Amazon Prime (September 2008) and Hulu (October 2007) for market share in the first decade after they launched streaming. However, in the last five years, some of Netflix\u2019s biggest competitors today entered the market, including Disney+ (November 2019),\u00a0 AppleTV+ (November 2019) and HBOMax (May 2020).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The influx of new services launched the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/12\/14\/23507793\/streaming-wars-hbo-max-netflix-ads-residuals-warrior-nun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">streaming wars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d and they slowly started chipping away at Netflix\u2019s goliath-sized market share. In fact, in the first quarter of 2022, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/19\/business\/netflix-earnings-q1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix lost more subscriptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than it gained for the first time in 10 years. The company lost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adweek.com\/lostremote\/netflix-to-launch-paid-sharing-in-2023-in-effort-to-crack-down-on-password-sharing\/67458\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.2 billion <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subscribers by the end of Q2 last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these streaming services don\u2019t have as many subscribers as Netflix, they are growing fast and pose a real threat to Netflix\u2019s potential growth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9004111224651905\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Streaming-Servcie-Popularity-Q1-2023-300x175.png\" alt=\"Streaming Service Popularity Q1 2023\" width=\"830\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Streaming-Servcie-Popularity-Q1-2023-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Streaming-Servcie-Popularity-Q1-2023-768x449.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Streaming-Servcie-Popularity-Q1-2023-600x351.png 600w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Streaming-Servcie-Popularity-Q1-2023.png 787w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Problem\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Account sharing has been a long-standing issue for the company, with over 100 million households estimated to be sharing accounts. There are even some state and federal laws designed to address the problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011, Tennessee passed a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennessee_login_law\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Login Law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d that makes it illegal to share passwords to sites like Netflix and iTunes.The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/legalblogs\/technologist\/revisiting-the-legality-of-password-sharing-as-netflix-begins-to-crack-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Computer Fraud and Abuse Act <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(CFAA) prohibits sharing passwords and can be considered a federal crime. However, enforcement is rare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Netflix continues losing prospective and current subscribers to other streaming services, they are concerned that password sharing could limit their growth in ways detrimental to their longevity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, at times, password sharing was embraced by the platform and largely overlooked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9004111224651943\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Sharing-is-Caring-300x132.png\" alt=\"Netflix Sharing is Caring\" width=\"398\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Sharing-is-Caring-300x132.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Sharing-is-Caring-600x263.png 600w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Sharing-is-Caring.png 691w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the company is looking to reverse its stance on password sharing. As a result, they are pursuing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/product\/framework\/revenue-growth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revenue growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the expense of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/product\/framework\/revenue-retention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revenue retention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Business Problem, Not A Market Problem\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The market likes the relaxed password-sharing approach because many people flocked to Netflix when it first launched for convenience and affordability. Netflix wants to protect its revenue stream and increase its market share.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/10\/28\/1130669763\/what-do-users-want-from-their-tv-streaming-a-new-npr-ipsos-poll-has-some-answers#:~:text=As%20major%20platforms%20like%20Netflix,content%20and%20ease%20of%20use.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NPR conducted a recent survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> asking what users want from a streaming service. Their top concerns were cost, ad-free options and original programming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9004111224651992\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/NPR-Poll-on-Streaming-1-300x122.png\" alt=\"NPR Poll on Streaming\" width=\"733\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/NPR-Poll-on-Streaming-1-300x122.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/NPR-Poll-on-Streaming-1-1024x417.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/NPR-Poll-on-Streaming-1-768x313.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/NPR-Poll-on-Streaming-1-600x244.png 600w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/NPR-Poll-on-Streaming-1.png 1166w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 733px) 100vw, 733px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Netflix isn\u2019t focusing on the market needs, and in some cases, is doing just the opposite of what the market wants:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/3\/24\/22993562\/netflix-price-increase-us-plans-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subscription fees <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased in January 2022 (from $14 to $15.50 for the standard plan). And they\u2019ve offered a new ad version at a lower cost.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2023, Netflix plans to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/why-netflix-releasing-fewer-original-films-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reduce the number of originals released.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They plan to phase out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/netflix-free-trial-30-days-ended-1562623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30-day free trials.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix has no interest in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/10\/9\/17957658\/netflix-live-tv-ted-sarandos-vanity-fair-brett-kavanaugh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live TV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/04\/25\/netflix-is-not-yet-considering-live-sports-but-heres-why-it-should\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> live sports.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix has also<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamingbible.com\/news\/cancel-netflix-trends-as-new-cancellations-increase-044601-20221214\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> canceled several popular shows.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And most notably, they\u2019re cracking down on sharing logins outside the household.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey are taking the easiest path to increasing revenue, but they are not solving a market problem. In fact, they might be creating a market problem, which could backfire, resulting in them losing market share,\u201d said a Pragmatic expert.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every company needs to increase their revenue, that\u2019s true. There are other ways they could have gone about doing that wouldn\u2019t alienate their base.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the listened to their market, they might find other options:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay per view sporting events<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional fee for specialty content\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purchasing or renting previously retired content\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Streaming parties as an add-on experience\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus myriad options that could come out with additional <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/product\/framework\/market-problems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">market research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paid Sharing | The Launch\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To address the account sharing problem, Netflix introduced a &#8220;paid sharing&#8221; trial in Chile, Peru and Costa Rica.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/about.netflix.com\/en\/news\/update-to-paid-sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under this trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an account holder pays an extra $2.99 for a person outside the household to access the service. However, it\u2019s still unclear how much that could cost in the U.S. (potentially anywhere from $2.50 to $4.50 for each account).\u00a0 And users must connect their viewing device to their home&#8217;s WiFi and watch something on Netflix at least once every 31 days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the trial was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2023\/feb\/02\/netflix-accidentally-posts-guidelines-for-cracking-down-on-password-sharing#:~:text=Netflix%20has%20mistakenly%20launched%20a,had%20since%20been%20taken%20down.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accidentally launched <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across Netflix&#8217;s help center pages in other countries, the company quickly took down the information and updated the article to only apply to the three trial countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement, Netflix said, \u201cFor a brief time yesterday, a help center article containing information that is only applicable to Chile, Costa Rica and Peru went live in other countries. We have since updated it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix could have launched in their test markets more quietly to understand better how the broader market might respond. Additionally, they seem to have failed to prepare their sales and customer service teams with sufficient training, creating confusion in the market, which is the last thing you want in the middle of a launch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an attempt to help people add sub-accounts or transition to their own accounts, the company gave subscribers the ability to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/digital\/news\/netflix-profile-transfer-feature-password-sharing-paid-account-1235405871\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">convert user profiles into new accounts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a dashboard to let users log out of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/digital\/news\/netflix-log-out-individual-device-password-sharing-1235432404\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> devices remotely.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first three months of 2023, Netflix expected to roll out paid sharing in other countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9004111224652025\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Paid-Sharing-Plans-300x169.png\" alt=\"Netflix Paid Sharing Plans\" width=\"673\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Paid-Sharing-Plans-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Paid-Sharing-Plans-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Paid-Sharing-Plans-150x85.png 150w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Paid-Sharing-Plans-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Paid-Sharing-Plans.png 929w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 673px) 100vw, 673px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumeraffairs.com\/news\/netflixs-password-sharing-showdown-draws-near-012523.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Netflix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also said, \u201cFrom our experience in Latin America, we expect some cancel reaction in each market when we roll out paid sharing, which impacts near-term member growth. But as borrower households begin to activate their own standalone accounts and extra member accounts are added, we expect to see improved overall revenue, which is our goal with all plan and pricing changes.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The enforcement of these paid-sharing fees is less clear now than in Netflix&#8217;s previous language about account sharing. The current policies hinge on a user&#8217;s account&#8217;s &#8220;primary location&#8221; and the devices connected to the Wi-Fi network.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company uses the IP address from the Netflix device or app to determine the device&#8217;s general location. The main account holder will have to set the primary location, and if they don&#8217;t, the service will automatically set one based on IP address, device IDs and account activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the company has not specified how it will enforce these restrictions against watching Netflix from a different household. And Netflix&#8217;s help center states that the company doesn&#8217;t collect GPS data to determine the precise physical location of a device.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Market Response\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, the market is pushing back against the new paid-sharing plans. Specifically, people are expressing frustration and confusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the rules when someone frequently travels or stays in different locations for long periods of time?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you comply with the 31-day rule if your account is on multiple devices?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does this mean for college students, elderly parents, those who travel for a living or families living in more than one location per year?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9004111224652041\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Public-Outrage-300x152.png\" alt=\"I am canceling because you're making it to difficult\" width=\"559\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Public-Outrage-300x152.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/02\/Netflix-Public-Outrage.png 589w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 559px) 100vw, 559px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Netflix the Next Blockbuster?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all know Netflix played a pivotal role in Blockbuster&#8217;s decline and eventual bankruptcy. But if we look back, several key factors lead to Blockbuster losing its customer base.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockbuster <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sparrowone.substack.com\/p\/the-blockbuster-late-fees-of-ad-tech#:~:text=Blockbuster%20charged%20its%20customer%20%241,course%2C%20hated%20the%20late%20charges.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased its late fees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That earned the company nearly $800 million, but at the cost of frustrating its customers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company couldn\u2019t keep up with the technology and convenience offered by its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/rise-and-fall-of-blockbuster\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biggest competitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Netflix and Redbox. The company tried to compete by offering its online rental service, but it was too little too late. Blockbuster was already facing declining revenue and high debt levels, and the new venture only added to its financial problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At its peak, the company had accumulated significant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2010\/03\/24\/news\/companies\/blockbuster\/?npt=NP1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debt,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> primarily through investments in new stores and technology and expensive marketing campaigns. The company&#8217;s large debt load made it difficult for Blockbuster to adapt to changes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, Blockbuster failed to listen to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pragmaticinstitute.com\/product\/framework\/market-problems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">market <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because they were too focused on their traditional business model of renting physical DVDs and Blu-rays. Netflix began trending on TikTok and Twitter, where users expressed their frustrations.
